A year’s reflection

It’s been an incredibly busy year for ophthalmology services at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital Edinburgh.

To help support our growing service we have now increased our core team to seven members. The team are as follows: Sarah Alderson is our clinic manager and laser technician. Sarah has many years of experience in laser eye eye surgery and is completely focused on patient care in the field of vision correction. I’m delighted that we now have a full service marketing function looking after all of marketing and social media to ensure we spread word about our services to the good people of Scotland. Sarah Martin continues her role as personal assistant to Mr Ross, while Elaine Shepherd continues to support Mr Mantry’s work. Pauline Rossi joined us last year as our new receptionist and bookings manager. Pauline is very much a people-person and with many years experience working in hospital care, we are thrilled to have her join us. Ashe Tait continues as our talented laser refractive optician.

Spire Shawfair Park Hospital now hosts the only laser eye surgery centre in Edinburgh. This service is a partnership between Laser Vision Scotland, Spire Hospitals Edinburgh and Alcon Wavelight, a global leader in excimer and femtosecond medical laser technology. Our laser suite provides hospital based laser eye surgery for the correction of refractive errors such as short sightedness and astigmatism. Laser works by gently reshaping the eye surface so that light focuses correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. Modern lasers (such as our Wavelight EX500) are incredibly precise and safe. The EX500 uses infrared computer technology to monitor the eye position 500 times every second to make sure laser is applied in exactly the right place, and for the average short-sighted spectacle prescription of -3.00 diopters, the procedure now only lasts 9 seconds! What makes our laser service different from other services? Here are just a few examples. Unlike high street laser centres, we operate within a regulated healthcare environment. You will always meet and spend time with your surgeon prior to treatment, and for your aftercare, as well as for the laser procedure itself. You will always be invited to visit the laser suite during your initial consultation, so that you are familiar with the laser on the day of treatment. We have only one price for laser treatment, rather than having an advertised price then the actual price. In addition you will never be asked for a deposit which ties you into treatment, and we offer our patients 0% finance. And finally, did we mention that we are the only laser eye centre in the south east of Scotland?
